About the only vehicle segment Japanese automakers have failed to dominate is the pickup market, though not for lack of trying. Over the years they’ve offered plenty of solid pickups, it’s just that they haven’t sold in great numbers.
Two of the freshest models are ready to attract new customers. The Honda Ridgeline is brand new for 2017 and Toyota’s popular Tacoma was refreshed not long ago. Which of these trucks would YOU rather own? Please, vote in our latest poll so we can find out!
Starting with the freshly foaled Honda, it features a 3.6-liter gasoline V6 under it’s hood. This engine is good for a solid stable of 280 horses along with 262 lb-ft of twist. Direct fuel injection and an 11.5-to-1 compression ratio help provide these impressive figures; cylinder deactivation and active noise cancellation keep it efficient and quiet.
The Ridgeline’s only transmission is a six-speed automatic. It routes torque to either the front or all-four wheels if you shell out extra scratch for this traction-enhancing option.
Unlike Honda’s pickup offering, the Toyota Tacoma rides on a traditional frame; the Ridgeline features unibody construction like cars, minivans and other light-duty vehicles.
In any event, the Tacoma is powered by one of two engines. There’s a base four-cylinder or a 3.5-liter V6. The up-sized propulsion unit puts out 278 horsepower with 265 lb-ft of twist. It can be matched to either a six-speed automatic transmission or a manual with the same number of ratios (YAY!).
As you’d expect in a traditional pickup, both two- and four-wheel drive is offered by Toyota.
